Once, the Buddha picked up a handful of leaves and asked his disciples: "Bhikkhus, which do you think is more—the leaves in my hand or the leaves in that forest over there?" The disciples answered in unison, "Naturally, there are far more leaves in the forest than those in your hand, Blessed One." Then the Buddha said:

"That is right. There are infinitely more leaves in the forest than the few I hold in my hand. My words are the same. There are far more things I know but have not spoken of. What I tell you is very little. Why do I not speak of all I know? Because speaking of them would be of no benefit to you. Those words would not help you in your practice, nor would they help you find peace of mind, extinguish suffering, gain perfect wisdom, or achieve enlightenment. That is why I do not speak of them.

Then, what is it that I do speak to you about? I speak to you because it is beneficial. I tell you: 'This is suffering. This is the cause of suffering. This is the cessation of suffering. This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering.' These are the things I speak of. I speak because these words align with the purpose of your practice and help you achieve what I wish for you to attain."

Looking at this example, even though the Buddha knew everything through his enlightenment, he did not say everything. He carefully selected only what he judged to be useful and beneficial to people. He clearly distinguished between what should be said and what should not. For example, he did not speak about whether the Earth is eternal in terms of time or space. Knowing such things does not change one's life. The question of whether a soul exists or not is also meaningless if it does not change a person's attitude. For a mayfly that lives only for a day, it does not matter if the Earth is eternal. Whether this material world is real or fake is also unimportant. Only the present moment exists.

부처님께서 어느 때 나뭇잎을 한 움큼 쥐고 오셔서 제자들에게 물었습니다. "비구들아, 내가 지금 이 손에 들고 있는 나뭇잎과 저 동산에 있는 나뭇잎들 중에서 어느 쪽이 더 많다고 생각되느냐" 그러나 제자들이 이구동성으로 "그거야 당연히 부처님 손에 들고 있는 나뭇잎보다 저 숲에 있는 나뭇잎들이 훨씬 많습니다." 라고 대답했습니다. 그러자 부처님이 말씀하셨습니다.

"그렇다 내가 손에 들고 있는 이 나뭇잎보다 헤아릴 수 없을 정도로 많은 나뭇잎이 저 숲에 있다. 나의 말도 그와 같다. 내가 알고 있지만 하지 않은 말이 훨씬 더 많다. 내가 너희들에게 하는 말은 얼마 되지 않는다. 왜 알고 있으면서도 말을 하지 않겠느냐. 알고 있으면서도 하지 않는 것은 그 말을 너희들에게 해 봤자 너희들에게 아무런 이익이 없기 때문이다. 그 말들은 너희들이 들어봤자 수행을 하는 데도 도움이 되지 않고 마음을 평안하게 하거나, 고통을 소멸시키거나, 완전한 지혜를 얻거나, 깨달음을 성취하거나 이런 것에 도움이 되지 않기 때문에 말을 하지 않는다. 내가 말을 하지 않는 것은 이런 것 때문이다.

그렇다면 내가 너희들에게 하는 말은 무슨 말이겠느냐. 너희들에게 말을 하는 것은 너희들에게 유익함이 있기 때문이다. 너희들에게 하는 말은 '이것은 고통이다. 이것은 고통의 원인이다. 이것은 고통을 소멸하는 것이다. 이것은 고통을 소멸하는 길에 이르는 것이다.' 등 바로 이런 것을 의미 하는 말들이다. 이러한 말은 너희들 수행의 목적에도 부합하고, 내가 너희들에게 얻도록 하고자 하는 것을 성취하는 데에도 도움이 되는 까닭에 말을 하는 것이다."

이 사례를 볼 때 부처님께서는 당신이 깨달음을 통해 모든 것을 알고 계신다고 해서 모든 것을 다 말씀하신 것은 아닙니다. 꼭 사람들에게 유용하다고 판단되고 이익이 된다고 여겨지는 것들만 선별해서 말씀하신 것입니다. 그러므로 해야 할 말과 해서는 안 될 말을 분명하게 선별해서 하신 것입니다. 예컨대 시간적으로 이 지구는 영원할 것인가, 아닌가. 이런것에 대해서 부처님은 말씀하지 않으셨습니다.

또 공간적으로 이 지구라는 것이 영원한 것인가, 영원하지 않은 것인가. 이런 것에 대해서도 말씀하지 않으셨습니다. 왜냐하면 사람들이 지구가 시간적으로 영원한가, 영원하지 않은가를 안다고 해서 그 삶에 영향을 줄 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없기 때문입니다. 영혼이 있고 없고의 문제도 안다고 해도 사람의 태도가 바뀌지 않는다면 의미가 없는 것이지요. 예컨대 하루살이가 고작해야 하루를 사는데 그 하루 동안 이 지구가 영원한 것인가 영원하지 않은 것인가가 중요하지 않습니다. 이 물질세계가 진짜인지 가짜인지도 중요하지 않습니다. 오로지 지금만이 존재할 뿐이니까요.
