종교보다 중요한 마음의 깊이 Beyond Religion: The Depth of the Heart

“종교를 갖는 것도 분명 중요한 일이다. 그러나 그보다 더 중요한 것은 그 종교를 통해 자신의 심성이 얼마나 깊어지고 넓어지는가 하는 것이다. 만약 그렇지 못하다면, 마음이 오히려 천박해져 차라리 종교 없이 건강한 상식을 가지고 살아가는 것만도 못하다. 모든 종교는 큰 나무와 같아서 겉으로는 다른 줄기와 가지를 내지만, 땅속 깊은 곳에서는 그 뿌리들이 서로 만나 하나가 되어 있다.”
During the winter retreat of 1994 at Gobul Seonwon in Baekyangsa, the 85-year-old elder master Seong Ong gave the following teaching while expounding the Blue Cliff Record:
“Having a religion is certainly important. But what is even more important is how much deeper and broader one’s mind and character become through that religion. If it does not bring about such growth, the mind may actually become shallow, and in that case it would be better to live with sound common sense without any religion at all. Every religion is like a great tree: outwardly it sends out different trunks and branches, but deep underground the roots meet and become one.”
